Water Supply Exploration & Construction
McMillan Pacific were engaged to drill a number of water supply bores to supplement existing water supplies for the irrigation of the golf course. As the subsurface geology was not well known, initial drilling was focused on investigation and exploration. Through close consultation with the Client and Groundwater Engineers MSDS were able to tailor the bore design to maximise the yields and overall performance. Although the exploration encountered mainly brackish water, it was deemed adequate for the purpose of the development.
Bottled Water Supply Upgrade
Project Manager – Iain Haycock (100% tenure)
McMillan Specialist Drilling Services (MSDS) were successful in tendering for a range of key water supply upgrades for the Fiji Water Plant situated at Yaqara Fiji. The upgrades followed a video inspection and borehole survey completed by MSDS in mid 2007, and involved the construction of a new supply bore, the refurbishment of the original supply bore and the decommissioning/refurbishment of a network of monitoring bores surrounding the area.
As Natural Waters of Viti Ltd are the fourth largest supplier of bottled water in the world and the largest exported commodity from Fiji, particular emphasis was placed on ensuring the upgrade did not compromise the 6 day/24 hour bottling operation. Construction was carefully planned and scheduled around plant shutdowns where possible to minimise any impact on the current supply bore.
Works initially focussed on the construction of a new supply bore to then be used during the refurbishment of the existing supply bore. The new construction bore was drilled at a diameter of 300NB to depth in 6 hours and the target aquifer was encountered at the expected depths of between 40 and 60mbgl. The bore was subsequently screened and lined with high grade 316 Stainless Steel and sealed externally to protect the aquifer from any shallow groundwater or surface water contamination sources.
Following the completion of the new supply bore, and after rigorous water sample analysis (conducted in the USA), the plant was finally approved to receive water from the new bore. During this time surrounding monitoring bores were either decommissioned or refurbished to ensure the same level of security as the supply bores against any shallow groundwater or surface water contamination sources.
The project was completed sucessfully, without compromising plant production, and ensuring the continued supply of high quality bottled water.
