MSDS were engaged to conduct a detailed subsurface investigation along the proposed route of the Southern Motorway.
Investigation methods included CPT/CPTu Soundings and Boreholes (using Direct Push technology) for sampling and in-situ testing purposes. Target investigation depths of up to 20+mbgl were successfully achieved. Given the presence of shallow subsurface gravels, the Dual Tube drilling method was also used in combination with the CPTu to enable soundings to achieve target depths (top of Riccarton Gravel). The ease of integrating the two methods ensured investigation locations were completed rapidly.
A total of 25 CPTu soundings and 6 Dual Tube Boreholes were completed within budget and on schedule (11 days). In September – October 2008 an additional 14 environmental boreholes were successfully completed with Hollow Stem Auger methods to depths of 12mbgl for the installation of 50NB gas and groundwater bores (15 days).
