MSDS have been engaged since 2000 to conduct a variety of geotechnical drilling services relating to ongoing port maintenance and facility upgrades. Investigation methods have comprised CPT/CPTu Sounding, Cable Percussive, Rotary Air Flush, PQ Soil/Rock Coring and Dual Tube boreholes. Most drilling methods have been used to depths of 60mbgl from both onshore and offshore drilling positions.
Sampling and in-situ testing has comprised of Bulk and Thin Wall Tube sampling, Diamond Coring, SPT testing, Geonor Vane Shear testing, Dissipation testing and more recently Dual Tube sampling.

MSDS were engaged to conduct a detailed subsurface investigation within the existing Press building to determine liquefaction potential and obtain engineering parameters for foundation design. Investigation methods included 4 integrated CPT/CPTu Soundings and Boreholes (using Direct Push technology). The main challenges faced onsite were the limited access to test locations (positioned around vibration sensitive printing machinery with limited head room) and the need to stage the work around the normal Press printing/delivery schedules. Concrete coring, hand clearing and careful reinstatement were fundamental to ensure the Press operations were not compromised.
MSDS were involved during the initial consultation to provide advice on suitable drilling equipment, methods and in-situ testing/sampling. Close contact was maintained throughout the site works by giving progress updates, preliminary site results/findings. Despite facing difficulties with unforeseen subsurface obstructions (old building foundations), running sands and strict site containment of drilling fluids, the project was completed within schedule (5 days) and budget.
